The Hull Identification Amount (HIN) is a 12- or fourteen-character serial amount that uniquely identifies a ship. The HIN is analogous to some VIN on a car or truck.

The primary three digits tend to be the Manufacturer’s Identification Code (ex. Boat brand name such as Sea Ray, Meridian, and so forth.).
